The North Land’s 20 conference connects reactionary ideas, formed post the industrial revolution, to our present technological time. We consider our continued relationship with nature, materials, making and the body in a progressive way.

The conference is centered around people whose practice or research engages with the following topics: both traditional and untraditional glassmaking techniques, merging technology and nature, changes in society after the Industrial Revolution, the shape of design and making in our future lives, the body in relation to materials and manual skills.

Speakers will raise questions such as: Is making empowering? Are studio glassmakers still inventing new technologies? 200 years after the industrial revolution is the handmade vs the machine made still relevant? Is it important to keep old techniques alive? Can technology bring you closer to nature?

North Lands Creative Glass celebrates 20 years of experimenting with glass and connecting with the world from a remote Scottish village.
