Casting Brilliance: Glass by Colin Reid & Symposium: Saturday
9/11

Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum
As part of the events programme accompanying Casting Brilliance, a major retrospective exhibition of Colin Reid’s work, is this symposium.
Looking at contemporary artists’ practice, the following speakers Felicity Aylieff, Annie Cattrell, Luke Jerram, Andrew Lacey and Colin Reid discuss their own experiences and Pam Reekie talks about the development of ther Contemporary Glass Society. Felicity Aylieff, Senior Tutor at the Royal College of Art, on the Ceramics and Glass Programme, has most recently been developing her practice working on large-scale ceramic pots in collaboration with factories in Jingdezhen, China. Annie Cattrell has been a tutor at the Royal College of Art since 2000 and has lectured in numerous other art colleges. Her work looks at the relationship between art, science and the poetic and has led her to partnerships with specialists in neuroscience, meteorology, engineering and psychology. Luke Jerram works internationally and across all media to realise his ideas, often working with specialist teams of scientists, engineers and craftsmen. Projects include a global street piano installation, Play Me I’m Yours, encouraging people to stop in their tracks and play, Glass Microbiology – beautiful structures of viruses and Sky Orchestra (hot air balloons flying over various cities with speakers playing music). In his practice and academic research Andrew Lacey draws on the renaissance and is influenced by the historical and archaeological discoveries he makes through his research.

Colin Reid has been working with glass since the 1980s constantly finding new ways to work with this fragile material and taking it to its extreme to create pieces which are majestic and magical. His innovation has given him the cutting edge in kiln-cast glass and international recognition for his inspirational work. The Contemporary Glass Society is one of the most important networks for glass. Pam Reekie has been and continues to instrumental in ensuring the success of the society.
