FOOD NON FOOD TO BE THE NEW DESIGN DEPARTMENT AT DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN

Changes in the design programme from the 2014-2015 academic year

From September 2014 students at Design Academy Eindhoven will be able to graduate in a completely new specialisation: Food Non Food. In addition, the departments ‘Man and Living’ and ‘Man and Public Space’ will be merged to form a single new department: Public Private. With the changes to the programme of design departments, Creative Director Thomas Widdershoven and Director of Education Tonny Holtrust are taking significant steps in the development of design education. Interest in food is growing, within the academy and outside it. The appointment of Public Private was occasioned by the growing overlap between the private and the public in our everyday lives. DAE sees new opportunities and inspiration for designers in these developments.

Marije Vogelzang will be the Head of the new department Food Non Food. She graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2000 and has specialised as an eating designer. Marije: "In my field of action I am detecting a growing demand for creative minds that can focus on these various issues within the subject of food. There is great scope for innovation, for clarification, for exposing and questioning traditions and for a more poetic or artistic approach to food. Graduates from the Food Non Food department can go on to work in the food industry, in hotel and restaurant service, event design, in retail, the agricultural sector or in transport as brand and experience designers. The possibilities are endless."

Stijn Roodnat, Head of the new Public Private department, has worked with Marleen Kaptein as studio Kapitein Roodnat since he graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 1999. Stijn: " The increasing blur between public and private changes the way we should address these two domains. Especially in the crossover, on the borders and in the extremes of this new field, we find the challenges where our designers can make a difference.”

Design Academy Eindhoven has 8 design departments, including the new ones, to which first-year students progress after obtaining a Propedeuse certificate. A number of the students who have just completed their first year have already opted for Food Non Food. The new department will start with 15 students in September. Students currently studying in the Man and Public Space and Man and Living departments will be joining forces in Public Private.
