Location
Lite Brite is in the Gowanus part of Brooklyn - a great industrial area (that is quickly gentrifying!). Workshop participants could stay in any of the neighboring areas and still be within walking distance (Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, etc). It is a very safe area.
Workshop facilities
There is a small coffee shop in the building where Lite Brite Neon is based, serving coffee, pastries, etc, as well as lunch. There is also a Whole Foods grocery right across the street and they have anything you might want there, as well as a small restaurant inside. Lite Brite Neon has a full kitchen, refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, and coffee pot as well. And there are many restaurants and bars in the surrounding neighborhood as well.
Lite Brite Neon has the following torches available for use:
2 x fishtail hand torches 2 x Ribbon burners (16” long) 2 x crossfire’s 2 x bench burners
We recommend bringing a camera and sketchbook. All other materials will be provided. If you have a particular neon idea in mind, feel free to share and we’ll let you know prior to the workshop if this is realistic or not.
The workshop will cover the history and theory of neon, color, brightness, bending, fusing, blowing, electroding, mobile neon, installation methods and techniques, through discussion, demonstrations, and practical exercises. We aim for everyone to leave with a fully-working neon if this is their wish, however we cannot guarantee this nor the lifespan of a neon made by a participant. We are also aware that this may not be the driving force behind a participant taking the workshop. New York Neon Workshop provides a rare occurrence; priceless knowledge that will be shared by some real heavyweight names in the neon industry, an industry that is often frustratingly shrouded in secrecy!
