Candidates are required to propose a research theme related to the archives housed in the Glass Study Centre. Staying in the Residency of the Vittore Branca Center campus on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, moreover, provides the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchanges between the scholars and the Fondazione Cini academic community as well access to the Libraries and Photo Library, the services of a tutor and the Foundation's cultural events.
The scholarship is just one in a series of actions promoted by the Glass Study Centre aimed at gradually expanding the General Archive of Venetian Glass, available to the Italian and international academic community, and reviving and promoting the art of glassmaking, especially as regards the 20th century. The 2015 scholarship was won by Guillaume Serraille (Lyon, 1978), who, in November, will conclude a research project entitled The ornamental repertory of Murano glass: uses and changes in filigree and murrina.
Created in the Fondazione Cini Institute of Art History in 2012 as part of LE STANZE DEL VETRO, the Glass Study Centre focuses on the regular acquisition, cataloguing and preservation of art and historical archives of the Venetian Murano glassworks. The archives mainly consist of drawings, designs, correspondences, documentation, production catalogues, press reviews and photographic reproductions. These unique material sources for historical, artistic and scientific studies are not only available for researchers and glass enthusiasts, but are also to be used for educational purposes in collaboration with schools and universities. Recently the archives of contemporary artists working on Murano have been digitised and made available for consultation. The artists involved are Ginny Ruffner, Peter Shire and Emmanuel Babled, while a large group of drawings made by Dino Martens for the Aureliano Toso glassworks has also been acquired. Started in 2014, the important operation of elaborating and popularising online the materials in the archives continues with the recently acquired rich Vinicio Vianello Archive and the Seguso Vetri d’Arte Archive; in the latter case the various items now held by the Glass Study Centre include over 20,000 drawings and 25,000 period photographs.
The creation of a General Archive of Venetian Glass making continuous use of bequests and private archives also involves the Centre in systematic exchanges of publications, acquisitions and donations for the benefit of its specialised Library as well as the organisation of seminars and conferences.
The Glass Study Centre Archive and Library are open to the public by appointment from Monday to Friday, 9.30 am – 1 pm / 2 – 5 pm.
