SCOTLAND’S CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN GLASS MAKING
Located in the wild and dramatic landscape of Caithness on the North East Coast of Scotland, North Lands Creative Glass is one of the world’s most prestigious centres for the study and development of glass as an artform, providing excellent facilities, opportunities and inspiration to artists working with glass from all over the world.

We run a programme of activities including master classes and symposia with renowned artists, glass skills classes, artist residencies, beginner workshops and community programmes. Our ethos is to encourage and support collaboration and experimentation between artists working across different media to extend the possibilities in the creative use of glass. Our international conference explores expansive themes around glass, contemporary art and craft, historical and social influence and local culture in a unique Highland setting.

Recognising increasing concern about the environmental impact and sustainability of using glass as a form of artistic expression, North Lands Creative Glass is committed to embedding environmentally considerate behaviour across the whole organisation and to becoming a leader in long-term sustainable thinking. Our Environmental Policy, which governs our actions towards this and all who use our facilities are asked to respect, can be found here.

The North Lands Creative Glass Collection of Contemporary Glass comprises around 200 pieces by some of the world’s most highly regarded artists working with glass. The Collection has been acquired from masters and artists-in-residence over 18 years, and in many cases objects represent a seminal point in the artist’s career, forming a fascinating record of recent developments in contemporary glass practice.

We hold regular exhibitions in the North Lands Creative Glass Gallery, and have well equipped studio spaces to hire for individuals and groups. With new building developments just completed, we have improved our facilities so more people can share the unforgettable North Lands experience.

El Ultimo Grito: Body System II

02/08/2016 - 08/08/2016

Rematerialisation of Systems with El Ultimo Grito

In this workshop we would like to explore both the potential that glass could have to change the way in which we perceive, and approach a technological device, in this case a radio, and how it could be an intrinsic part of its technical attributes, for example how sound is produced, or how the switch might work by using water poured in the glass vessel, as the conductor of electricity.

Reinventing the Sphere with David King

In this class, glassblowing skills will be developed through repetition and thoughtful analysis of the process. Artists, designers, and glass makers alike will benefit from a back to basics approach with one on one technical support and no previous experience needed. Students will establish a strong foundation by learning how to “set up” their bubbles in the Venetian style.

Colin Reid: Musa Cavendishii table

22/08/2016 - 30/08/2016

Casting in Nature with Colin Reid

Working with kilncast glass we will use the wonderful landscape and nature around North Lands as the source of form, texture and inspiration from which to cast. We will explore a variety of moulding techniques to translate natural forms into cast glass, working both outside in the landscape and in the studio. The basic techniques of lost-wax, mould making, firings and annealing will be covered both in theory and in practice.

Crazy Paving with Richard Wentworth

During this nine day class  you will take a journey in the rural landscape and urban sites of the region, but expect to leave the track. Wentworth understands an artist’s working practice to be essentially about trying things out, finding other ways of doing things. What does it mean to look at something and understand it? Everywhere we can be impressed and inquisitive, from the moment we wake up and ask ‘how were my shoes made?’
