Macalla will take place at the Auditorium, St Patrick’s College Drumcondra on Friday 8th April 2016.
The performance of the ”instruments/sculptures” using breath and fingertips, will bring de Buitléar’s finely blown glass to percussive life, their extreme fragility contributing to the sound and tension of what will be an extraordinary show. Several new ”instruments/sculptures” will be premiered at this performance.
O’Maonlaí and fellow HotHouse Flower Peter O’Toole will perform a mix of traditional songs and their own folk-rock compositions. Ó’Maonlaí and O’Toole showcase their peerless musicianship in the company of guest musicians from the Glasnevin/Drumcondra area and Róisín de Buitléar, in what promises to be a magical musical event.
The performance will stand alongside an exhibition of glass hand blown forms by nationally and internationally renowned artist Roisin De Buitléar. Some of the works are now part of a state collection and would be on loan for the duration of the exhibition.
The exhibition to include several new pieces of de Buitléar’s work, will be on public display in St Patrick’s College Cregan Library in Drumcondra, from 4th-28th April 2016.
Macalla - The exhibition will take place in the glass cantilevered section of the building which forms the visual link between the new campus and the main Drumcondra Road.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. 9-5 Monday to Saturday.

Macalla: Exhibition & Show
MACALLA is a captivating exhibition by glass sculptor Róisín de Buitléar, a pioneer in the field of contemporary glass in Ireland. Set in the serene surrounds of the new Cregan Library in St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra, the glass-cantilevered building provides a perfect backdrop for her visually and sonically fascinating glass objects.
The exhibition is accompanied by a performance of music and glass sounds by one of Ireland’s best known musicians and songwriters, Liam Ó Maonlaí, with fellow Hothouse Flower Peter O’Toole, the result of an ongoing collaboration with Róisín de Buitléar. Liam and Peter will be joined by guest musicians from Glasnevin/Drumcondra and beyond in what promises to be a magical musical event.

Artists Statement: Macalla – Echo
As a collection of displayed objects these works communicate through pose – a visual echo of sound and light, created through articulating form. Some resemble ethnic musical instruments suggesting a method of playing or tone; some suggest dialogue through their relationship to each other.
As performance pieces, the composition becomes one of human interaction with Glass. Innate qualities of the material: resonance, timbre and fragility, contribute to the sound and tension of each performance. A composition of sound, source and musician, changes with the performance and the performer. The glass object becomes a tool for communicating ideas in different contexts. Sometimes the resulting sounds are unfamiliar – new. To create new sound is rare, exhilarating, challenging and an on going artistic investigation.
