CALL FOR ARTISTS: YOUNG MASTERS ART PRIZE 2017
This autumn, The Cynthia Corbett Gallery will launch the fourth edition of the Young Masters Art Prize with a call for artists and an exhibition. The exhibition will bring together work by previous Young Masters artists and will take place at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery in London from 2 to 8 October, during Frieze week.
The Young Masters Art Prize celebrates emerging and established contemporary artists who pay homage to the skill and innovation of the Old Masters and art of the past. In 2014, a second strand of the Prize was launched - the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize - to give a separate platform for ceramics and reflect the creativity, innovation and excellence of this artistic medium.
Artists working in any medium and from anywhere in the world are invited to apply for both prizes from 4 October 2016. Applicants for the Ceramics Prize must also show exceptional command of the medium of ceramics and an awareness of the heritage of ceramic craft.
The Young Masters shortlist will be announced in April 2017 and the winners will be announced at the end of June 2017 during the prize exhibition in London. A judging panel including art historian Godfrey Barker (Chair), Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts, Charles Saumarez Smith and critic Jean Wainwright will award three prizes: an overall prize of £2,000 and two highly commended prizes of £500 each will be awarded courtesy of the Artist Collecting Society (ACS). A new ‘Be Smart About Art’ award of £500 will be inaugurated with this edition of the prize. The Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize will be judged by a panel comprising the Crafts Council’s Daniella Wells; Janice Blackburn, Curator of Contemporary Arts and Crafts at Sotheby’s; ceramics patron Maylis Grand and collector Preston Fitzgerald. A main Ceramics Prize of £1,500 and a Highly Commended Prize of £500 will be awarded.
The Young Masters Art Prize is a not-for-profit initiative founded in 2009 by Gallerist Cynthia Corbett that gives a platform to both emerging and established artists who show exceptional skill and artistic integrity whilst working in dialogue with the Old Masters and the history of art. Since its launch, the Prize has quickly established itself as a significant international project and has attracted critical and public acclaim. It has also developed a strong international profile through its curatorial touring programme. The winners of the 2017 edition will be invited to exhibit their work worldwide as part of the Young Masters International Tour in 2017- 2018.
The winner of the 2014 Young Masters Art Prize was German painter Juergen Wolf, whose work combines superb draftsmanship and classical technique with surreal and erotic imagery. The winner of the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize was Matt Smith, who has since undertaken a residency at the V&A. In his latest body of work, Smith used the closed Spode ceramic factory in Stoke-on-Trent as his starting point, working with discarded factory moulds to create objects from these fragments of Stoke’s industrial heritage. The exhibition to accompany the launch of the call for artists – featuring Matt Smith and Juergen Wolf – will take place at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery in London’s St. James’s from 2 to 8 October 2016.
Applications are invited from 4 October 2016 to 28 February 2017.
