Berlin Glas e.V. ´s Artist-in-Residency programme hosts internationally known and emerging artists and designers in the studio for a 5-day residency, working closely with our hot-shop team to explore and develop concepts that can be translated into glass.
Over the last 13 years, the DMY International Design Festival in Berlin has become a meeting place for the international design community. The festival runs over 4 days showcasing renowned designers, as well as emerging talents. New developments and future trends in interdisciplinary projects are highlighted, blurring the boundaries between art and design. Since 2013, Berlin Glas proudly designed and made the awards for the Festival and the studio has been a featured event in the Design Spots with public glassblowing demonstrations and on-site exhibitions. We are looking forward to showcasing ten emerging artists from Australia in the 2017 DMY Festival, in an exhibition entitled Made in Australia.
Berlin Glas has close relations with the Australian National University School of Art in Canberra, ACT, and has since 2013, built strong connections between Canberra and Berlin. Germany had a strong impact on glass and the modern glass movement in Australia. In 1982, Hamburg-based artist Klaus Moje was invited by the Director of the Australian National University in Canberra to start a glass programme in the School of Art. He took the opportunity to start a new programme that would not be limited to glassblowing, introducing kiln forming, carving and “cold-working” techniques. Students were taught a wider range of working with glass, and he created a curriculum that emphasised technique as much as it did concept. Klaus Moje´s tenure at the Australian National University School of Art (ANU-SOA) inspired subsequent generations of artists using glass as a principle material. Since 2014, Berlin Glas has hosted graduates from the ANU-SOA for a 4-month residency. This collaboration fostered a significant exchange and on-going partnership between the two studios.
Concurrent to the DMY Festival and Artist in Residency, Berlin Glas will organize the third exhibition entitled Collaborative Endeavour – Contemporary Glass from Canberra + Berlin, celebrating the collaboration between our studio and the ANU-SOA. The show will take place at the Australian Embassy in Berlin from June to the end of July. It was shown previously at the Australian Embassy in Berlin from September to December 2015, and the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf from February until May 2016.
Within the last 40 years, both the Australian National University in Canberra, and the JamFactory in Adelaide, have graduated artists who push the boundaries of glass and are considered the best worldwide. Contemporary glass art and design is part of Australia´s modern heritage, and our participation in Australia now 2017 will promote artists from both countries, bringing more awareness to Germany about the importance of this medium in the fine arts and design.
