Bright LIGHT
-Transparent. Vulnerable. Handcrafted. Reflective.
These are all characteristics of glass. In ING House, artwork is on display from three glass artists: Myungsu Seo (South Korea), Mia Lerssi (Denmark) and Maria Dukers (Belgium). They each use the material in totally different ways: Dukers uses glass for more architectural forms, while Seo emphasises the natural aspect of it. Lerssi emphasises the intense sensual meeting that is taking place when we experience colours, shapes and the tactile quality of materials.
Three institutions have come together for this exhibition: an art academy (Gerrit Rietveld Academie), a museum (Nationaal Glasmuseum Leerdam) and ING Insurance.
Dukers and Seo displayed their artwork in the Nationaal Glasmuseum Leerdam. In fact, Dukers’ work was the result of an assignment from the museum itself. Lerssi is teaching at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (almost neighbours to ING House) and was Seo’s teacher when she studied there.
ING House - with its unique design - is the right place to have this exhibition, both innovative and transparent.

Maria DUKERS
The Belgian artist Maria Dukers has a background in architecture. On the one hand, her work refers to the stained glass tradition and is inspired by the geometric drawings of Felix De Boeck from the years 1922-1923. De Boeck belongs to the first generation of modernist painters in Belgium. On the other hand, Dukers’ creations are also influenced by abstract painting, such as the Dutch art movement De Stijl.
Dukers herself describes her work as "Bringing the light into the space. The space is being composed of volumes and panels through which the light makes the colours reflect and play with the various facets of each composition. The essence lies in the light vibration occurring in this meticulously designed space, thanks to the colour, the transparency, the juxtaposition, the superposition and the depth."
In this exhibition, you can see an artwork made of special coloured glass panels, called Nuances cachées (Hidden nuances). She made this especially for her solo exhibition at the Nationaal Glasmuseum Leerdam. With support from the Stokroos Foundation, Dukers developed this new installation.

Mia LERSSI
Mia Lerssi studied at the Sanderberg Institute in Amsterdam and now teaches at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Lerssi creates three-dimensional (3-D) tableaus, reminiscent of window displays, mixing her own glass creations with various found objects.
By doing so, she investigates the aesthetic and visual properties of glass. Using an impersonal and commercial aesthetic to attract the viewer, she wishes to blur our perception of a hierarchy of materials; whether the items on display are rare, handmade or cheap to produce.
Lerssi confronts the viewer with the absurdity of man-made creations when set alone or into new settings. Their ordinary function is ignored and through their new surroundings they suggest an archaeological approach. Her artwork makes us pause and look at the small details around us. Lerssi wants the viewer to become intimate with the items on display, in order to give unimportant things importance.

I get inspiration and materials from nature
“I get inspiration and materials from nature. In particular, the element of water inspires me the most. It carries life and contains the memory of the world. Through my creations, I hope that city dwellers can remember their experiences in nature and find a sense of calm within them,” says Seo. She studied at the glass department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and graduated in 2012.
Seo’s Raindrops are placed all around the glass walls of the lobby of ING House. These are blown glass drops filled with real rainwater. In this exhibition, she also incorporated her project Water Donation - Building up a Water Library (in the showcase), which began a couple of years ago. Seo collected water samples from wherever she travelled and personally created unique glass jars for each new sample. “In my opinion, water carries the memories of a place and its people. I am collecting water, and preserving people’s memories,” she says.
