8TH BIENNALE OF GLASS
6/10/2017-8/10/2017
The Biennial of glass creators is a major event in the cultural landscape of the territory, and beyond, since 2003. This year, the eighth Biennial welcomes more than 60 glassworkers from all over Europe. With its 1 000 m² exhibition, the hundreds of unique pieces presented there and its 8 000 visitors in 2015, this trade show promotes crafts and contemporary creation in glass.

The Biennial is above all a meeting point. Glass professionals, amateurs, collectors, curious people can meet each other in a place where the noise of ovens and the canes of glass blowers have been echoeing since the middle of the 18th century.
Thanks to this legacy we wanted to invite glassmakers to present glass as something timeless and fascinating, with all its techniques and its forms, as so many scores on this material that never stops to amaze.
Finally, this 3-day event cannot be summed up as a show because we have wanted to wide the offer by programming animations for several years. Furthermore, the Biennial will be the opportunity to see demonstrations, exhibitions, films, conferences, to exchange with the creators and understand the passion that animates them. That is the reason why we welcome this year the 3rd National Meeting of Dalle de verre technique, as well as a collection of ancient glass beads, or the screening of a documentary film about the artist Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert.
We are very pleased to be able to contribute to highlight the work of these women and men.

Over the years, the Biennial has become a highlight of contemporary glass in France. A time for creation, but also a time for commerce. The glass sector leads glassmakers - sometimes even more than other art making sectors - to act in an economic reality in order to create with glass. Today, the context is difficult: many galleries that used to promote glass creators closed down. Yet the breath is still there.
The activities of the Museum, through residences inviting young glassmakers, and of course through the production of the Biennial, aims to support those who have chosen to become the mediators of an ancestral art. Mediators of techniques and knowledge, mediators of a heritage continually reinvented, mediators of the dreams of those who love glass.
Other fairs in France take part in this effort, bringing together passionate volunteers, from Palau del Vidre to St Just St Rambert. We are all driven by the same desire to share a part of the path of the masters of fire. And the economic aspect - even if it is essential - does not go beyond the formidable human adventure constituted by these moments of encounters and exchanges.
In Carmaux, each biennial is made up of a selection of glassmakers among the candidates who honor us with their application. We are committed to put the event in its own time, and to offer the continuous renewal, the diversity of the plastic and technical approaches, and of course, a quality requirement to a demanding public.
For this 8th edition, the main techniques of hot and cold glass are shown. An art unknown to the public will also have a main place, with the reception of the 3rd National Meeting of the Dalle de verre technique. Beyond the techniques, there will be an extreme variety of aesthetic sensibilities, with a particular emphasis on sculpture, representing nearly three-quarters of the exhibitors.
We hope that the encounter between the creators and the public will offer once again a dream suspended in time, but well anchored in space, in Carmaux.

Domaine de la Verrerie
The « Domaine de la Verrerie » is the former residence of the Solages family, who chosed to exploit the Carmausin area. The first Royal Glassfactory based on mineral coal in the South West of France was founded in 1754. The building of the former Royal Glassfactory has become the Museum / Glass art Center since 1985.
Owned by the Carmausin-Ségala Community of Municipalities, the Domaine de la Verrerie is an exceptional heritage complex. This is intrinsically linked to the history of the South-West coal, the Royal Glassfactory being the oldest proto-industrial vestige of the Tarn.
The Domaine de la Verrerie, known as «the land of Carmaux», had been property of the Solages family since the beginning of the 18th century when Paul de Solages and Marie de Ciron got married. The Domaine was gradually fragmented due to the reduction of the land since the 18th century. Indeed, it included a number of elements built as part of the landscape that have disappeared: a park for workers (the Pré-Grand), the city of Fongrande where the miners lived, as well as the house of the Director of the Mines of Carmaux, INRA and the Lycées. In a way, this reflects the paternalistic and aristocratic humanism of the de Solages: the Castle of the family was in close contact with the dwellings of the glassmakers (located near the Royal glassfactory, they were destroyed in the 1960s). Nearby, the sundial - placed on the current guardhouse - regulated life at the Domaine.
Today it only represents 17 hectares. It is nevertheless composed of several buildings of the XVIIIth and XIXth century and a park of several hectares with numerous species of trees and singularities.

Bringing about fifty artists and craftsmen from all over Europe together, this exhibition has become the unmissible meeting of creation in the field of glass.
Two strong wills guide the approach of the organizers:
- PROMOTE CRAFTS AND CONTEMPORARY CREATION by enhancing the men and women who are behind tools and works
- ENCOURAGE THE MEETING BETWEEN GLASS PROFESSIONALS, COLLECTORS, ART LOVERS AND PUBLIC, creating an unprecedented encounter between renowned artists and young talents.
It concerns artists and craftmen with an ARTISTIC CREATION APPROACH. Since its first edition, the organizers wanted to create a quality operation based on a rigorous selection of professionals in glass crafts. Thus, at each edition, more than one hundred glassmaking designers submit their applications. Only 50 are chosen for the quality of their creations, the nature of the technique used, ensuring that a part of the exhibitors is renewed in order not to bore the public.
In Carmaux, ALL TECHNIQUES ARE REPRESENTED: Blown glass, molten glass, stained glass, Tiffany technique, fusing, thermoforming, lampwork glass ... The exhibition brings hundreds of unique pieces together: decorative objects, sculptures, stained glass, light fixtures, jewelry...

Meeting of Dalle de Verre
THE BIENNIAL WELCOMES THE ASSOCIATION THAT PROMOTES DALLE DE VERRE TECHNIQUE FOR ITS 3RD NATIONAL MEETING:
«ARTS OF CONTEMPORARY GLASS IN DALLE DE VERRE TECHNIQUE
FOR ARCHITECTURE & DECORATION»
Stained glass made with the Dalle de Verre technique has been for almost a century an architectural element of the national heritage (religious and civil) but a world unknown to the public.
Contemporary Dalle de Verre offers a wide range of visions and shapes where the signatures of painters and glassmakers have been exercised, some of which are recognized on the international scene: Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Pierre Soulage, Max Ingrand, Jean Godin, Gabriel Loire, Henri Guérin, Louis Barillet, Jacques Le Chevallier, Joseph Guevel, Jean Lesquibe, Henri Martin-Granel, Claude Idoux, Tristan Ruhlmann, Frédérique Duran and others.

Since the end of the 20th century, the creation of stained glass with Dalle de verre technique has no longer been limited to architecture. A new contemporary artistic dimension is being developed thanks to talented young designers.
Unfortunately, without learning or information in schools of architecture, design and art, this craft has been declining since the late 80s.
The main idea of the association is based on 3 pillars: presenting qualitive contemporary and original creations, recalling its history, (re)making known the achievements of the architectural heritage to immerse the public in the heart of this fascinating universe, giving then the keys to understand this particular craft.
After Strasbourg (European Exhibition of Crafts «Resonance (s)») in November 2014, then Saint-Leu-la-Forêt (Salon ArtExpo) in May 2016, here comes the third national meeting, with 17 workshops, including Claude BAILLON, known for his sculptures in Dalle de verre technique.

Conferences
TWO OTHER CONFERENCES DURING THE BIENNIAL :
GLASS AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Linked to the exhibition presented at the Museum, «Itinerary (s), glass and photography», the glass will be approached both as a photographic support but also as a representation in art.
Dominique Blanc (director of the Arthur Batut Museum in Labruguière) will present glass as a material used in photography.
Donatien Rousseau (photographer, author and historian of photography, Prix Jean Dieuzaide 2015), will present a forgotten but important photographer in the history of photography: WILLY ZIELKE, who is still unknown. This Polish photographer (1902-1989) is linked to the movement of the new objectivity and the Bauhaus. His work on glass (1923-1937) is exceptional in light quality and formal research.
BRINGING CONTEMPORARY GLASS ARTISTS TOGETHER TO CREATE A BUZZ : THE ARTISTS COLLECTIVE « DARE D’ART »
Dare d’Art is a collective of glass artists created in 2010. They came together to offer a panorama of their work through collective exhibitions and artistic installations. They are about forty glass artists and craftmen with different aesthetic sensibilities and techniques. They are united by the desire to share and valorize their know-how.
They represent a wide range of current glass techniques: blown glass, molten glass, fusing, thermoforming, stained glass, cold working... They trained in fine glass, fine art or design schools, they were initiated in prestigious workshops or approached glass art in an unusual way. These creators have in common the sense of innovation, in their own universe and sensitivity.
Dare d’Art is an association with a national influence, bringing glass artists from all over France together and offering events throughout the region.

Ancient Glass Beads
«TRADING BEADS, BARTER BEADS»
A COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 5000 BEADS REPRESENTING NEARLY 1000 YEARS OF HISTORY
Márcia de Castro and Guy Maurette traveled to Africa for almost twenty years. They assembled an amazing collection of over 5000 ancient glass beads. Beads bought in markets or shops, in Ouagadougou, Bamako and Mopti, Abidjan, Niamey, Timbuktu, Addis Abeba... Colonial towns where, more than a century ago, counters and merchants, missionaries, soldiers and explorers transported, traded, exchanged or offered to the «natives» very large quantities of glass beads made in Venice (Murano), Amsterdam, Bohemia or Briare (France).
The glass bead, firstly created in Mesopotamia and Egypt, more than 4500 years ago, was synonymous of social status, sacredness, protection and wealth. Today, the bead in all its forms, its colors and shades challenges us both technically and aesthetically. Depreciated in recent history, treated of «verroterie» and «shoddy objects» until the middle of the 20th century, these glass beads must be recognized for their value.
The collection of Márcia de Castro and Guy Maurette features more than 5 000 beads. From the oldest, made in the 7th century on the shores of the Mediterranean, to the beads of Briare that will accompany the French explorers while coloniting Africa at the end of the 19th century, passing through the beads of Venice and Bohemia, this exhibition highlights all aspects of this particular art, the glass bead.

Cinema
«I FELL IN LOVE WITH GLASS, JUST A PASSION, YOU KNOW? AND I HAVE JUST CONTINUED SINCE.»
Realized in December 2016, «Heart of Glass» is a documentary film directed by Jérôme de Gerlache.
Heart of Glass is a journey. A journey through several countries in pursuit of a history. The story of a young glass-blower with singular talent: Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert.
Jeremy tells us about his history, his painful past, the tragedies that left him on the ground, his rebirth, his redemption, and the craft that made him an artist.
From the day he met glass, the molten matter allowed him to find out how to express his anger, transcend his sadness in beauty, channel his rage to transform it into objects that try to bring a little beauty to this world.
He burned his demons in the oven of that passion.
Self-taught, Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert grew up between France, West Africa and the United States. He discovered the profession of glass blower at 19 and was educated by several glassmakers, including Jaime Guerrero in California and Davide Salvadore in Murano. He became his assistant for several years. Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert has managed to turn his back on a painful and tumultuous past by mastering this art ...
«The ambition of this documentary film is to create the portrait in action of a singular artist, to tell the story of his life, to convey his passion for his profession, and finally to grasp what upsets him in creation.»

At the Museum
-COLLECTION LUCIE ET PAUL BERNARD
CONTEMPORARY GLASS 80s-90s
Lucie and Paul Bernard’s collection shows that the 80s and 90s are dynamic years for French artistic and decorative glass. The incredible value of their collection is given by stories of human importance, affective, subjective and symbolic interest. What is a collection? What does it tell? What is the link between the artists, the art works and the collectors?
Lucie and Paul loved each other, they loved art, the art works and above all they loved meeting the artists. The story of the collection is filled with meetings and sharing, creating many moments of life. They are little stories that sometimes meet the main story. Behind them there are women and men: the artists and the people that make art exist, the amateurs, the enthusiasts, the collectors. > Agenda>
-ITINERARY (S), GLASS AND PHOTOGRAPHY
This exhibition invites you to travel in space and time, between here and far afield, between innovations and technical progress, between glass and photography… It proposes another point of view on the industrial revolutions, which deeply changed our civilisation.
Faster and bigger, the 19th Century is the time of superlatives. Distances shorten thanks to steam trains and giant metallic viaducts.
Meanwhile, the invention of photography enables to freeze the accelerating time, like an impulse of the mankind trying to capture the time that suddenly escapes. The exhibition “Itinéraires” highlitghts this paradox by creating a correspondence between architecture, landscapes and photography.
The photographic glass plates here exposed captured the huge building site of the Viaur Viaduct. Situated in Tanus, it is one of the most important art works in our area – the Ségala – and in the Carmaux- Rodez rail line.
