ABOUT FAENA PRIZE
The Faena Prize for the Arts recognizes artistic experimentation, encourages post-disciplinary and temporal exploration, and promotes inquiry of the infinite links among art, technology, and design. This year’s open call aims to summon multidisciplinary artists from across the world to imagine site-sensitive works that rethink performance and time-based practices, in dialogue with the physical and symbolic space of the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires while engaging with the cultural and urban conditions of the city of Buenos Aires. Projects that highlight the potential crossovers and synchronicities between the two spaces and two cities of the Faena District may ultimately be eligible for exhibition in both spaces. Project proposals should be submitted online at www.faenaart.org by February 15th, 2018. The winning proposal will be produced for exhibition at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires in 2019 and, if appropriate, may be exhibited at the Faena Forum Miami Beach.
 
Art today has abandoned the notion that vision is reason’s vehicle of choice, and space no longer seems to be the privileged model for experience. Under these historical circumstances art should continue to favor time and its irreversible and heterogeneous nature, as it was once approached through Henri Bergson’s fundamental concept of “duration” (la durée). Traditional science and philosophical definitions have imposed spatial homogeneity and reversibility upon a temporal dimension that consequently became static. Time was thus petrified in the delimitation of past, present and future as separate entities, while duration for Bergson meant “invention, creation of forms, continuous production of that which is entirely new.” Rethinking duration challenges us to reflect upon the boundaries and definition of art today.
 
This edition of the Faena Prize for the Arts serves as a platform for a continued reflection on these questions and invites artists from all disciplines to rethink the space of Faena Art Center Buenos Aires from perspectives based on time and duration. The goal is to summon multidisciplinary artists from across the world to imagine site-sensitive works that dialogue not only with the monumental architecture of the building but also with the cultural and urban conditions of our immediate surroundings. Our institutional mission in this edition is to explore time itself as a working material.
 
The winning proposal will receive a US $75,000 prize, US $25,000 in unrestricted funds will be awarded directly to the artist. The remaining US $50,000 will be allocated towards the production of the exhibition at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires, with the possibility of being adapted for Faena Forum Miami Beach. In addition to the main prize, two special mentions of US $1,000 each will be awarded to the second and third most outstanding proposals.
 
Under the coordination of Ximena Caminos, Chair and Artistic Director of Faena Art, the 2018 selection jury will include: Carlos Basualdo, Chair Faena Circle and Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Andrea Bellini, Director of the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Genève; Anita Dube, artist and curator of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018; Pablo León de la Barra, Curator, Latin America, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and curator of the 2016 Faena Prize winner Roger Hiorns; and Franklin Sirmans, Director, Pérez Art Museum Miami. The advisor to the Faena Prize is curator Jesús Fuenmayor.
 
While maintaining the open call, Faena Prize also features a Nominating Committee that will include fourteen curators and museum directors from around the world. These nominations will be anonymous and will be reviewed by the Faena Prize Jury along with all open call submissions.
