MADE IN DENMARK Design since 1900
-Design since 1900
Olaf Thormann, Sabine Epple for the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts Leipzig
Danish design continues to be the epitome and expression of a timeless modern lifestyle, and designers such as Georg Jensen, Verner Panton, Nanna Ditzel, Henning Koppel and Arne Jacobsen have shaped the product and living culture of an entire generation – most notably in the second half of the twentieth century.
With a review of around 120 years of design history, this publication reveals how Danish design is the result of a success story that began as far back as the late nineteenth century.
One exemplary representative of Sk.nvirke, the Danish form of Art Nouveau, is the universal artist Thorvald Bindesb.ll. He was a role model for subsequent generations of artists and designers, such as Mogens Ballin and Johan Rohde, whose work tends towards the geometricisation and reduction that still inform Danish design today.
With a bountiful, open layout and vibrant full-page illustrations, the publication presents a selection of some 350 objects from the extensive, signifi cant holdings of Danish artworks in the GRASSI Museum for Applied Art in Leipzig.
Among the illustrated objects are important key design icons such as the PH Artichoke pendant lamp, the Panton Chair or contemporary ceramics as well as hitherto rather unknown and surprising treasures.
Concise introductory texts locate the collectors’ items in a design-historical context, and a short biography or text dedicated to each of the 180 designers, workshops and
manufactories can be found in the appendix.
Around 350 exemplary objects from the holdings of the GRASSI Museum in Leipzig document the course of Danish design from 1900 to the present day. A multifaceted,
opulent book for all lovers of Scandinavian design.
