The brief is for the design of a window to be installed in the patient reception and waiting area of the Proton Beam Unit currently under construction at University College Hospital, a member of the University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). The Proton Beam Therapy (“PBT”) unit is a new clinical facility which will enable UCLH to extend and broaden its cancer services. It is due to be commissioned in 2020 and will be one of two sites delivering this treatment across the NHS.

UCLH believe that the provision of the Arts within a hospital environment is integral to patient wellbeing and a high quality, modern patient-centred NHS. The Arts & Heritage Department, headed by Mr Guy Noble, is responsible for the management and delivery of the arts programme across the Trust. Within the PBT unit the aim is to provide a welcoming and uplifting environment for all patients, visitors and staff through the use of a varied and stimulating arts and heritage programme.

Michael Holman, the Stevens Awards Scheme Organiser explained: “UCLH NHS Foundation Trust has a rich tradition of working with glass artists and designers to create artwork for the hospital.  Amongst other desirable attributes, the Trust takes the view that the art it commissions should be colourful, stimulating, thought- provoking, uplifting and a  memorable and a conversation piece. This commission is thus intended to play a key part in meeting these objectives.”

Arrangements have been made for all Competition entrants to visit UCHL and survey the intended location for the installation. Full details and eligibility crietia are given in the Competition Brief: http://glazierscompany.org.uk/competitions-and-awards/

The Stevens Competition entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of glass artists and designers, led by Helen Whittaker, Barley Studios. UCHL has confirmed that funds are available to realise the winning design. The final decision about which of the entrants, if any, will receive the design commission rests entirely with the UCHL.

The closing date for receipt of entries:
Young Designers’ Prize: Tuesday 5 March 2019 at 5.00pm by electronic transfer.
Stevens Competition, with sample panel: Thursday 4 April 2019 at 5.00pm to Glaziers’ Hall.
The winners will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony at Glaziers Hall, for the Stevens Competition and other awards, in London on Thursday 23rd May 2019.
