This remade book in German on Emile Gallé with new photo material starts in Band I Text with the Foreword by the author Bernd Hakenjos. After that you will find the chapter Biographie where the history of Gallé, his family, his schooling, ceramics, technique, the glass works from Historicism and Exotism, World Expositions, the European tradition, the heritage of the ancient world, the influence of the Islam, Japonism, the technical and formal investigation, Art Nouveau and Symbolism, the factory 1894-1904, form and decoration, his factory and the decline are written well and are accompanied by portraits, sketches and photos to give a good impression of his work. In The Technique, the different kinds of glass are described for his own work, the atelier work, Hüttework, followed by Production and sale, special types and series and signatures.
The next chapter on Furniture is followed by Patriotism, Botanism, Gallé and literature, Gallé copycats, a chapter on his place in parallel art movements, art theories and his position in society.
Band II Katalog pictures Ceramics, Glass and Furniture of the Art Nouveau. With great pictures and captions one can study each individual object and this book ends with design sketches and paintings and 4 pages on the ground forms of the vessels and their names.
Bernd Hakenjos (born 13 February 1945 in St. Georgen in the Black Forest; died 25 July 2006 in Düsseldorf) was a German art historian and former Director of the Hetjens-Museum/German Ceramics Museum in Düsseldorf. He was known to a wide audience through the broadcast Kunst und Krempel (art and clutter) of the Bavarian television where he surveyed and reviewed as an expert relevant works of art in the disciplines of porcelain and glass.
Two very well made books to study and read to understand the time, the place and Gallé and his work by good photo material and well-written texts, a joy to everybody who understands the need to keep the form with the content. To understand where glass art comes from, by this pioneer who made the impossible possible. All in two bands!
