“Lux Gloria”
Solar Art Glass Installation
Cathedral of the Holy Family, Saskatoon, SK, CANADA

The project title “Lux Gloria” is inspired by the beauty of God’s creation and Saskatchewan’s vast prairie skies by day and the northern lights by night. Within the silver, solar array there are twelve dichroic glass crosses, signifying the Apostles. There is also a circle, representing our prayer for Unity. This project is a world first - a Cathedral whose stained glass windows generate energy. There are 3 monumental, upper south-facing windows in a trapezoid configuration. These windows are modern stained glass embedded with solar cells, producing energy from sunlight. The windows were finalized, inspected and tied to the SaskPower grid in July 2013.

The Great South Windows
The largest window is 37 feet high by 12 feet wide (107 feet off the ground)
Each window is divided into 18 panels - 54 panels in total
Each solar panel is unique in terms of shape, size and design
Why an excellent location for gathering energy within a façade:
• south facing
• not shaded
• cold winter weather promotes cell efficiency
• abundant sunlight
• a highly visible and attractive solar project
• solar cells will also shade the interior from strong south light
• there is no possibility of snowfall accumulating on the solar array.

The city of Saskatoon enjoys more hours of sunshine than any other city in Canada with an average of 2381 hours of sunshine annually. 1113 hand-soldered, silver coloured polycrystalline solar cells are embedded in the windows. We expect the windows will generate about as much energy as 4 households use in a year.

SARAH HALL
Sarah Hall is an internationally recognized artist creating large-scale art glass installations and solar projects. Sarah began her studies at Sheridan College in Ontario and continued her education in the Architectural Glass Department at Swansea College of Art in Wales, UK.
Her exceptional contribution to the built environment has garnered ‘Honor Awards’ from the American Institute of Architects and the ‘Allied Arts Award’ from the Ontario Association of Architects. Hall’s artistic achievements were acknowledged by her induction into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 2002 and annual listing in the Canadian Who’s Who.
In addition to projects, lectures and exhibitions throughout North America and Europe, Hall has coauthored 35 published articles on glass art and published three books: The Color of Light (1999), Windows on Our Souls (2007) with Bob Shantz and Transfiguring Prairie Skies (2012) with Donald Bolen. Her work was the subject of J S Porters’ 2011 beautifully illustrated “The Glass Art of Sarah Hall”.

Sarah has been granted an Arts Fellowship from the Chalmers Foundation to support her innovative work in BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) solar art glass. Her art glass projects are fabricated exclusively in Germany. Sarah is well known for her artistic innovation and pioneering of new glass techniques. Her ground breaking work was recently featured in the CBC documentary series
“Great Minds of Design”.
