Daniele Bortotto, Product Designer, was born in Friuli in 1988. He began his studies in industrial design at the IUAV in Venice where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in 2010. He continued his studies at the ECAL, School for Design in Lausanne, Switzerland where he received his Master’s Degree in Product Design in 2012 following the presentation of his thesis on the “Relationship between the Olfactive Sense and Daily Objects”. His efforts resulted in the selection of his works by Camper and become one of the themes of the Summer Workshop of 2012 of this Spanish company in Majorca under the heading: 'The Smell of Design'.
From September 2012 to April 2013 he has been an intern at Adrien Rovero Studio in Lausanne. In July 2013 he was selected among the ten designers competing to the 8th edition of Design Parade, Villa Noailles.
Acqua Alta is the Italian word for the “High water”, phenomenon that occurs in the city of Venice. This project is conceived from the idea of enhancing a cultural and historical heritage that belongs to us: the city of Venice. Venice and the Venetian region are home to such craft techniques and secrets that few know how to play. Strong traditions characterize this city that has for a long time been the center of commerce and trade with the rest of the world.
Among them is the manufacturing of textiles, with a wide range of products created in the area. No less important is the Murano glass craft, and the trade of spices and essences that are precious keys to Mediterranean’s business. Acqua Alta as a tool to link all these techniques starting from a unique phenomenon. Water as transport, water as energy, water as an issue that affects the lives of citizens, leaving it’s mark. It deeply influences the life of this city, haping and surrounding it with thousands of different colors and textures. The first collection “Aqua Alta Collection”, is influenced by these findings. Aqua Alta includes a series of objects strongly linked to the theme. These can be summarized in a series of textiles (fabrics), a carpet, a series of fragrances correlated with diffuser, and a table lamp.
The intent of the collection is to translate an important and delicate issue, as an inspiration for the development of objects that fit in the contemporary living.
PASSARELLE
These objects are inspired by the structures that are quickly assembled along the Venetian streets during the aqua alta phenomena. The collection born from the collaboration with the glass blower Massimo Lunardon, and from the challenge of representing a delicate subject through the hand craft art of the borosilicate glass blowing. Suspended on thin legs, they're simply vases and containers; they try to repair what's inside them and suspend it as the typical Venetian walkways do, when they preserve people to get wet by the impending rise of the water level.
MURANO
The main idea of the collection has inspired the creation of a scent diffuser. This follows the theme in its materials, shapes and especially in the peculiar fragrances which diffuses. The idea is to design a piece in Murano glass to contain the essences, then this one is absorbed and diffused gradually through three ceramic biscuit cylinder. These elements take shape from the briccole, traditional poles used in the Venice lagoon to show the way to the boats.
Important part in the development of this project was the selection of the fragrances. We had the support of an important perfumer rooted in the territory, Lorenzo Dante Ferro, who reinterpreted the atmospheres of the lagoon through his fragrances. We also developed a series of small dispensers to recharge and change the fragrances when needed.
