Launched in 1998 by Ateliers d'Art de France, the festival was originally dedicated entirely to clay. In 2006, another fire art – glass – was added and the event was renamed the International Film Festival on Clay and Glass.

In 2014, in a desire to help Ateliers d'Art de France fulfil its mission to promote all the craft professions, this biennial event will become the International Film Festival on Crafts.
