2014 GLASS ART SOCIETY EMERGING ARTISTS PRESENTATIONS

Each year the Glass Art Society selects three emerging artists to present lectures at its annual conference. Through these lectures, artists with promising talent are afforded the opportunity to introduce their work to a large audience of established artists, educators, peers, collectors, art historians, and critics. Qualified individuals are nominated by professional academics and curators around the world, then the presenters are selected by a small jury. This year's jurors were Clare Belfrage, former Creative Director of Canberra Glassworks in Australia and Julie Muñiz, former Associate Curator of Design and Decorative Arts at the Oakland Museum of California. They deliberated over 21 applications and chose three outstanding artists to lecture at the GAS conference in Chicago: Steven Ciezki, Karen Donnellan and Charlotte Potter. The Emerging Artists Presentations will take place on Friday, March 22, 2014 from 8 am - 9:30 am at the Palmer House Hotel. In addition to having the opportunity to speak about their work at the conference, these three artists will also be featured in the first-ever Emerging Artists Catalog, which will be published online in the coming weeks. Steven Ciezki was born in Calumet City, Illinois. As a kid, he was fascinated with the art of drawing. During his college career at Illinois State University, he was able to experience glass blowing which changed his vision of the two-dimensional world. Upon receiving his BFA in glass from Illinois State University, Steven has plans to continue to learn from the artists who have inspired his fascination with glass. Both the delicacy of cup making and vessel orientated work has had a major influence on him. His work has been constantly developing with ideas of keeping the viewer’s perceptual experience in mind.

Karen Donnellan earned a Bachelor of Design from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and attained an MFA in glass from the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. She is a past Student Representative Board Member of the Glass Art Society and regularly contributes to their publication, GASnews. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art and the World Craft Council Prize for Applied Arts, in Belgium. Donnellan was the recipient of the Langley Kenzie Endowment Award in 2011, which funded a six month solo show at the Burchfield Penny Art Center, Buffalo, NY. In 2012, her work was shortlisted for the World Craft Council Film Festival.

Charlotte Potter received a BFA from Alfred University in 2003 and Honors MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010. Trained as a traditional glassblower, Potter has been a pioneer in developing glass as a performance and conceptual medium. Her work is in numerous private collections, including the Museum of Jurassic Technology and the Henry J. Neils, Frank Lloyd Wright house and has been exhibited worldwide at galleries such as S 12 in Bergen Norway and the Corning Museum of Glass. She is currently the Glass Studio Manager at the Chrysler Museum of Art and teaches glass and new media courses at Old Dominion University and Virginia Wesleyan College
