MASTERS OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

MARCEL WANDERS

Dirk Schrijvers

Marcel Wanders (°2/07/1963) studied in Arnhem (NL), Maastricht (NL) and  Hasselt (B) and graduated from the “Hogeschool voor de Kunsten” (ArtEZ Institute of the Arts) in Arnhem (NL)  in 1988. In 1995 he opened his studio in Amsterdam. He obtained worldwide attention in 1996 for his “Knotted Chair” (Figure 1). The object was developed together with the Delft Technical University for Droog Design, a company he co-founded in 2001, and paired high tech materials with ‘low tech’ production methods. This object was taken in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York (USA).

Today the Marcel Wanders studio numbers around 50 international design specialists, and he is a prolific product and interior designer and art director, ubiquitous with over 1700+ projects to his name for private clients and brands such as Alessi, Bisazza, KLM, Flos, Swarovski, Puma, among scores of others.

In his mission statement, Marcel Wanders states that he wants to create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true. His work excites, provokes, and polarizes, but never fails to surprise for its ingenuity, daring and singular quest to uplift the human spirit, and entertain.

In his designs, Marcel Wanders often mixes innovative materials and techniques with references to historical styles and archetypes, so users can easily connect to the pieces, enjoying them for a long time and in doing so create sustainable surroundings.

He wants to leave the coldness of industrialism and replace it instead by the poetry, fantasy and romance of different ages, vividly brought to life in the contemporary moment. To this aim many of his objects are decorated, which is untypical for the Dutch Design Movement in which the influence of the art movement “de Stijl” emphasizes the purity of the form without any decoration.

Glass by Marcel Wanders
Since 2001, he designed several objects in glass for own label “Moooi” but also for other companies including Baccarat, Normann Copenhagen, Marks and Spencer, and Swarovski.

Dialogues, a first series of objects in glass was designed for "Koninklijke glasfabrieken” in Leerdam (NL) in 1999. They represent short meetings between bottles and bowls, between cups and cans, between plates and bottles. He also produced some unica referring to daily used items like milk bottles.

In 2001, he made “Splinter” for Moooi (Figure 2). This block of crystal, that serves as a vase, incorporates the cool aesthetic of shards of glass and each vase possesses an identity its own.

For Baccarat, he created a series of  vases, decanters and glasswork. 'l'Ivresse des bois' is a series of wine and champagne glasses with his trade mark, a mask with a clown nose in the stem and stops (Figure 3).  'Les rois de la forêt' are a number of vases in which upon a first glance one sees clarity. The more one focuses the more distorted the vision due to the decorative incisions which reflects the light from the crystal (Figure 4). The objects of the 'la forêt des songes' combines different forms to glasses and candle holders on a glass podium. The decoration of the structures is opulent with a vegetal theme (Figure 5).

For KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, he designed in 2011 the tableware for the  European Business Class passengers including a water and wine glass in transparent glass and a simple form, unlike his decorative signature. This is found in the cutlery and the boxes that are added to the tableware set.

Normann Copenhagen produced a sculpted, transparent glass carafe, including. Cristal comes five cups in rich colored plastic. The unexpected contrast between the clear glass and the cups creates a pleasing dynamic between cold and warm materials, rigid lines and soft shapes. The form and the contrasting colors of the cups make a decoration of the carafe unnecessary (Figure 6).

For Marks and Spencer, he designed several series of glasses and glass decorative objects that are decorated with his typical etchings, colors or with the addition of a stem or glass bottom (Figure 7).

The glass designed by Marcel Wanders reflects most of the time his design philosophy adding a decorative twitch to the object.
