Figure 1. Vice Versa

GLASS BY XAVIER LUST

Dirk Schrijvers

Xavier Lust (°1969) studied Interior Design at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels, Belgium and started his own Studio in 1992 in Brussels, Belgium. From 2000 on, he designed for MDF Italia, an ongoing relationship which was the start of his collaboration with leading international producers such as Driade, De Padova, Cerruti Baleri, Fiam, and Extremis.

His work is clearly identifiable through the visible tension he gives to his objects, and the curves inspired by his innovative (de)formation process of metallic surfaces. He has received of dozens of awards including the Compasso d'Oro. His work has appeared in over 50 exhibitions and is a regular feature in international design publications.

An aspect of his work is the illusion of lightness and motion and in his designs he manages to express what seems impossible. It seems as though his works are not created but born.

Figure: 4
Graph
Desk in clear glass
74 x 220 x 80 cm (H x L x D)
Designed in 2009-2010 for Fiam                    www.fiamitalia.it

The fast lines of this desk seem to originate from a quick sketch, an impulsive gesture or the analytic curves of a chart.
The top sits on a 19 mm thick curved glass base secured by polished stainless steel ties. With elegant fluid lines and an immaterial yet equilibrated lightness, Graph affixes it's signature stamp.

Glass by Lust
From the midst of the 1990’s, he used glass to create a series of mirrors. The first series, Vice versa (1995)(Figure 1), he put a broad brushed steel frame around the mirror and placed them on a revolving axis so that the mirror can be moved and give different parts of the room. Giga and Gigogne (1998-99)(Figure 2) is another series of glass mirrors in which the reflecting glass is put again in a brushed steel frame. These mirrors can be hanging against the wall giving the impression of an open window. The last series of mirrors ‘le Miroir’ (2001)(Figure 3) is based on the same principle but the mirror glass is surrounded by aluminum. The mirrors can be put against a wall or can revolve around an axis.

Figure 5 . Ex voto

In 2009-2010, he designed Graph, a desk in clear glass, which was produced by FIAM (Figure 4). The fast lines of this desk seem to originate from a quick sketch, an impulsive gesture or the analytic curves of a chart. The top sits on a 19 mm thick curved glass base secured by polished stainless steel ties. The elegant fluid lines and an immaterial yet equilibrated lightness is due to the curves, so typical for his work.

In 2013, he designed a “ex voto”, a fruit bowl in glass, (Figure 5) inspired by sacred and magical votive offering. The fruit seems to float in an ovoid bowl referring to fertility. This design did not went into production.

In the same year, Caldeira, mirrors in fused glass were designed. The first mirror was the still water in a lake. The caldera or crater lake is a vast area that forms at the heart of some volcanoes after an eruption, many of which slowly fills with water. They were the inspiration of this collection of mirrors with turbulent whirling edges.

Produced at extremely high temperature, melting glass takes shape just as a mass of lava running down a volcano and covering its reliefs. Over time, nature sets this chaos and a plane of freshwater replaces the overwhelming energy of lava. The Caldeira - in French - sends us back a beautiful reflection.

Wall mirror made by fusion of glass in a mould.
Research established in collaboration with Fiam Italia and xavier lust studio.
Obtained by a relatively simple process of heat deformation of the material, the mirror gives a powerful visual effect full of reflections.
Various positions of hanging.
