KRISTALLINE WELTEN

– DIE GLASGEMÄLDE HEINRICH CAMPENDONKS

Myriam Wierschowski

On April 10, 2014, on the Day of the German Language in the Netherlands, the well-written and well-made book Crystal Worlds – the Heinrich Campendonk’s stained-glass Windows arrived in my mail postbox.
So, learn to read German, as this book is that language only, giving all information on the artist Campendonk, his life and work.

Heinrich Campendonk (3 November 1889 - 9 May 1957) was a Dutch painter, born in Krefeld, Germany. He was a member of the group Der Blaue Reiter from 1911 to 1912. When the Nazi regime came to power in 1933, he was prohibited from exhibiting as so many Modernists. He moved to the Netherlands, where he spent the rest of his life working at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, at first teaching Decorative Art, printmaking and stained glass, later as the Academy Director.

In the Foreword Myriam Wierschowski explaines that this book is in a series of leading stained art painters like Johan Thorn Prikker and Anton Wendling, with Campendonk’s body of works, now in the exposition in the Deutsches Glasmalerei-Museum Linnich from 5/4/2014 to 28/9/2014.

With chapters as Photo documentation – Stained glass in Architecture by Astrid Schunk; Figure, Ornament and Symbol on Campendonk’s early stained glass; Heinrich Campendonk as reversed glass paintinger; Full of flowers, full of life, full of light describes the works made in Amsterdam; Three extraordinary window objects by Christiane Heiser; Thorn Prikker brings me a lot, Campendonk’s development to modern church windows by Gisela Geiger; A peculiarly sparkling life on his reversed glass painting by Myriam Wierschowski; So we trust more and do continue on letter documents on stained glass from St. Kolumba in Cologne, follows the chapter on images, while the book closes with catalogue directory, biography, bibliography and Impressum.
With very good photo material, designs, stained glass in situ, the windows and cartons, the essays read very well and give all information one could desire.
