DMY International Design Festival 2014
The 12th edition of the DMY International Design Festival will take place from May 28 – June 1, 2014 in Berlin presenting new features.
As one of the central events of the upcoming Berlin Design Week (May 26

Over the years, the festival has continuously developed, remaining one of the highlights of the Berlin Design Week. This year, the festival will feature new sections such as the first launch of the DMY Market. Furthermore, DMY Berlin will once again host the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany which is endowed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy.

Central exhibition at the former airport Berlin Tempelhof
International designers, enterprises and young talents will present their current works, prototypes and material innovations in the hangars of the former airport Berlin Tempelhof. The claim to present innovative and progressive design approaches runs like a golden thread through the whole festival. In doing so, experienced developers, designers and worldwide operating design studios showcase next to the potential stars of tomorrow.
Thus, the festival will reflect the current state-of-the-art in the field of design – ranging from architecture, to furniture, product and communication design as well as offering a sneak preview on the trends of tomorrow.
On top, open talks and symposia will ensure exchange and communication between the protagonists and beyond.

DMY Market
The DMY Market is a new part of the festival offering visitors the chance to purchase design objects on site. At the same time, this market place gives the designers the opportunity to receive an immediate feedback on their work.
Social Design
Social Design is the leitmotif of a special exhibition organized by the curator
Max Borka presenting design drafts and products addressing the concept of social design. Within this context, mankind forms the focal point, including issues such as progress, sustainability, and basic human needs seen in the context of its environment. As these projects often address a new, not yet clearly defined target group, providing only little commercial attractiveness, possible marketing and communication strategies are to be discussed in open talks and symposia.
The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany
For the third year in succession, DMY Berlin is hosting the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2014. The award is generally considered the most important design award in Germany in the fields of communication and product design. Since 1969, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (formerly Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology) has awarded this prize every year for the most outstanding products and works in product and communication design. Criteria such as innovation, haptics, sustainability aspects, usability, constitutive criteria and an overall coherence form the basis of the selection of the winners. The aim of the award is to boost the importance of design in business enterprises. All of the submissions are presented to the public during the DMY International Design Festival 2014 and this year‘s nominees will be announced during the festival. The award show will take place in the autumn of 2014 in Berlin. Regional focus In a separate subexhibition on the festival grounds, a German federal state or region will present the best works of their designers. German design is globally considered to be of top-quality; the regional focus is supposed to highlight the diversity of German design. The first region to present itself is Brandenburg, Berlin‘s direct neighbour.

Seeing Glass is a series of glass objects. Through the use of materials, colour
and layering, unexpected effects are created which play with ones visual perception and the surrounding space. Presented are the latest results of an ongoing study into optical effects created with glass as the primary material. Two glass specialists allowed the designers to play around and experiment in their factories to investigate new possibilities.

DMY Universities & Schools
In the Universities & Schools section of the festival, research work and projects are exhibited, often with a very innovative and experimental character as they do not have to comply with the normal rules of the market. As the icing on the cake, participating universities also have the possibility to exchange information and enter cooperations with other internationally renowned education institutions.
DMY Awards, Symposia, Guest Country and the Berlin Design Week
The open talks and symposia will focus on current design-related issues such as the interconnectedness of private enterprises and design, intelligent products, and social design.
In a special feature, a selected guest country will be presenting a curated show of its best established designers as well as young talents and their works.
The best works in the categories Exhibitor, New Talent and Universities &
Schools will be awarded with the DMY Awards. The award show will take place during the festival.
