THE CORNING MUSEUM OF GLASS NOTABLE ACQUISITIONS 2013

Notable Acquisitions 2013 is the fifth in a Corning Museum of Glass publication series that celebrates the most important acquisitions made during the course of the year, both for the glass collection and for the Juliette K. and Leonard S. Rakow Research Library. The objects, which entered the collection either by purchase or by gift, are presented in chronological order, accompanied by brief commentaries on their significance and, in most instances, related bibliography.

Forty-nine major additions of the year are discussed and illustrated. Highlights include three cut glass gems made in England during the late 18th to early 19th century; a Faust Pokal designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel for Werner and Mieth, about 1820; a selection from the archives of Harry Hall White, a pioneer in the research of American bottles and flasks; the Guggenheim Cup, probably by Giuseppe Barovier, Salviate & C., about 1885; a "Dragonflies and Water Flowers" reading lamp by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, 1899; Constellation, an installation by Kiki Smith, 1996; and Ghost Walk under Infinite Darkness, by Andrew Erdos, 2013 (the Museum's 28th Rakow Commission).

After the introduction text by Karol Wight, Executive Director of the Corning Museum of Glass, the notable acquisitions of the museum are lining up per page or spread pages with good compact text, photo or illustration. Good for studying to understand the vast and growing museum collection from – for instance – a Venini cup from the 16th century, a Description of a Double Reflecting Microscope from 1730-1820, to the Silver Streak Electric Iron of glass made in 1946 or the art sculpture Continuous Mile by Liza Lou from 2006-2008. The book closes with the lists of donors to the Glass Collection and to the Rakow Research Library and the Index.
