With this Summer’s extensive exhibition, DG15 - 40 Years of Contemporary Glass in Denmark, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft takes stock of the Danish glass scene, as it currently appears as well as the development, which has characterized this field over the last four decades. 53 artists will be represented in the exhibition, which will display more than 100 distinctive works making it the largest presentation of Danish glass within the last ten years. The exhibition has two areas of focus, but only one common goal; namely to provide an overview of Danish glass. However, the exhibition also reflects the tendencies that points towards the future. The exhibition will be arranged as two separate presentations: The old building will provide a historical perspective of some of the distinctive works which represent the development within Danish glass, where as the new wing will present a “state of the art” view on contemporary glass.

The historical part of the exhibition has been curated by glass artist, Torben Jørgensen, who is known by many from his time as a designer at Holmegaard Glassworks for a quarter of a century. His selection has been motivated by an evaluation of singular works of art and its particular significance for the overall development, more than by the person behind it. Therefore, the exhibition does not claim to be the exhaustive story about Danish glass, but reflects the development as it is seen from Torben Jørgensen’s perspective, based on his personal, competent point of view.

The “state of the art” part of the exhibition has been put together by a selection committee, consisting of curator Jutta-Annette Page from Toledo Museum of Art, USA, glass artists, Tobias Møhl and Stine Bidstrup and Glasmuseet’s Director, Dan Mølgaard. From the applications received, they have selected works, which they believe show current tendencies within the field of contemporary glass and which they believe point in new directions. Some of the work chosen has been created by artists who have been working with glass for many years, but are still considered to be among the most important, contemporary voices. Therefore, some artists are represented in both parts of the overall exhibition as an expression of the fact that age and experience can easily walk hand in hand withan experimental approach and a desire to develop further.
DG15 - 40 Years of Contemporary Glass in Denmark offers both beginners and glass knowers a varied view on contemporary Danish glass as it stands now as well as of its development through the latest 40 years. Finn Lynggaard, The ”grand old man” in Danish glass and initiator of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, brought the tradition and enthusiasm of Studio glass back to Denmark, when he returned after a workshop in Canada in 1971. After the first years of experiments and improvisations with this demanding material, a tradition grew, characterized by a remarkable high level of artistic quality, which is founded on thorough knowledge of material and craftsmanship, but at the same time goes far beyond pure mastery of material and technique. A development, which can be studied in the exhibition.

“
Contemporary Danish glass is characterized by a manifold of artistic practices and forms. On the whole you can say that Danish glass follows two paths today. One, which is characterized by works which are grounded in archaic forms such as the vase, the vessel and the plate, but which, as a result of level of detail, scale, form or surface, goes beyond functional form. And another path which unfolds works which have broken away from the craft tradition and work freely with the material through practices and work genres, which can be recognized from contemporary art in a broad sense, Pia Bittner from Glasmuseet Ebeltoft

This exhibition in Ebeltoft is one of a series of notable exhibitions showing contemporary Danish glass, which puts glass in the spotlight as an interesting field for artistic expression. A field, which on one side puts the artist’s persistent choice of glass as the preferred material for artictic expression – quite its own, but on the other side also crosses established genres and art forms.
DG15 - 40 Years of Contemporary Glass in Denmark follows two previous exhibitions Danish Glass 94 and What’s New… Danish Glass 2004, which in 1994 and 2004, showed the status of Danish glass at the time.
During Summer 2015 a variety of events, artist talks and demos in the museum’s glass studio will take place in connection with the exhibition. The exhibition will be supplemented with a richly illustrated catalogue, and texts by a number of authors.
