STEFAN HENGST
-surface designer
“I’m originally from the Netherlands, where I attended St. Joost Academy in Breda. I moved to New York City in 1996 to join World Studio as a senior designer, and struck out on my own to found 2K+ Design in 1998. I also shared a partnership with xSITE, working with Ingeborg Bloem and Klaus Kempenaars on several projects throughout Europe and North America. In a career spanning more than 20 years, I have been included in several exhibits and gallery shows and have won awards for my design and photography."

“I am interested in pushing the boundaries of photography and challenging perceptions. The images I take not only explore my outer experience and vision of the world but also they express my personal history, emotions and beliefs. I see myself as a photographic poet of sorts. Every moment of my daily experience is full of brief encounters with multiple realities; from trash on New York City sidewalks to Internet pornography to the changing of the seasons. The personal, social and cultural artifacts of our individual and collective lives are all a part of my obsession with creating images that question notions of beauty, decay and desire. Throughout my divergent bodies of work there is often a sense of timelessness, of a frozen moment within a world of high-speed image saturation, no more or less meaningful than any other, but also no less full of wonder, complexity and nuance.”

“
As graphic designer and artist, I see objects as shapes, lines and forms with surfaces upon which to tell stories. I imagine every surface as a backdrop where we can project our personal ideas and narratives to make them a part of our everyday life.”

One of the latest projects was Life on a String for the Corning Glass museum that ended January 5th 2014.
The site Orange Alert –Dutch Art Events wrote:
“Symbolizing power, enabling ornamentation, and facilitating trade, glass beads are miniature masterpieces that have played significant roles throughout time and across cultures. This summer, a major exhibition at The Corning Museum of Glass will explore glass beads and beaded objects made by various cultures, representing 3,500 years of human history. On view from May 18, 2013, to January 5, 2014, Life on a String: 35 Centuries of the Glass Bead will showcase, for the first time, many important works from the large historical glass bead collection of The Corning Museum of Glass as well as objects on loan from seven institutions. The exhibition was designed by Stefan Hengst, Harry Allen and Vince DeLuca.”
